First Look at the Assassin's Creed Movie's Apple of Eden

As the release of Assassin’s Creed creeps ever closer, video game developer and co-producer Ubisoft is looking to keep up fan excitement all the way into December. We experienced these efforts firsthand just yesterday, when the film released a second trailer and poster featuring Michael Fassbender in his dual roles as Callum Lynch/Assassin Aguilar de Nerha. The second trailer was far more action-packed than the first, so you can catch our full breakdown of it here.

As excitement builds for the upcoming video game adaptation, though, some fans still worry that the film will not stay true to its source material. Despite some impressive action sequences in the trailers that mimic Assassins gameplay, the majority of the film focuses on the “present-day” workings of the Animus project, which was much less prominent in the games. Luckily, Ubisoft released some merch today that indicates the film will honor at least one of the game’s integral pieces from the past: the Apple of Eden.

Ubisoft is offering a life-size Apple of Eden in an ancestral chest as promotional merchandise for the film. Gamers will recognize the iconic weapon as a feature across the Assassin’s Creed franchise, with characters Desmond and Ezio wielding the Apples throughout the titles. In the movie, Callum/Aguilar must fight to protect one of the Apples from the rival Templars, which leads to a cool sequence that Fassbender himself actually helped to devise. The collectible replica, which lights up, retails for $49.99 on its own and is currently available for pre-order. Superfans can even get their hands on a collectible ancestral chest containing an Apple of Eden. Ubisoft will only sell 2,700 of these limited edition, numbered chests for $99.99.

In addition to the Apple of Eden, Ubisoft is also offering a replica of Aguilar’s hidden blade and collectible statuettes of both Aguilar and fellow Assassin Maria. The statuettes are based on 3D scans of the actors’ bodies, for maximum accuracy.

All in all, this haul could really make some superfan’s Christmas — provided, of course, that this film adaptation lives up to its high expectations. It would be somewhat of a gamble to pre-order these items: either you do it, and end up with a piece from an awesome adaptation that expertly fits in with the rest of the franchise, or you do it, and you end up with a relic of a failed film. As video game adaptations don’t have a great reputation among fans, many are wary of this latest attempt. It’s also unclear how well Assassin’s Creed will do at the box office, considering its stiff competition around Christmastime. Still, it’s encouraging to see the video game production company getting so involved, and this merch does show a certain level of dedication to the original games.

While we’ll all have to wait until December to see if the Assassin’s Creed movie can truly capture the awe-inspiring action of the video games, news like this can aid in speculation, debate, and excitement about the upcoming film. Sound off in the comments if you think this merch signals a faithful adaptation, if you think it’s just a hopeless marketing ploy, or if you’re feeling something in between.
