Justice League Dark Cover Artwork & Release Date Revealed

Justice League Dark is the latest comic book adaptation to find its way onto the small screen in animated form before making its debut on the big screen. The Doug Liman-directed live action Dark Universe will cover the same storyline of the original comics and the upcoming animated movie, concerning a group of heroes specializing in dark arts who assist the original Justice League in battling demonic forces invading their world. But there is no timetable for Dark Universe’s release; the animated Justice League Dark is about ready to be revealed to the world.

The trailer for Justice League Dark, released on Tuesday, gave a taste of the familiarly stylish animation that Warner Bros. is known for, in addition to the, well, dark subject matter that gave the movie its R rating. The release date for the movie, however, remained a mystery — until now. Warner Bros. announced when the movie will make its debut, and also revealed cover art for the direct-to-video release, which prominently features the principal members of the “dark” side of the Justice League.

Via ComingSoon, Justice League Dark will premiere digitally on January 24, 2017, and see a physical release on DVD and Blu-ray on February 7. The cover art features Batman (voiced by Jason O’Mara) at the forefront, with the members of the Justice League Dark behind him: John Constantine (Matt Ryan), Zatanna (Camilla Luddington), Deadman (Nicholas Turturro), Etrigan the Demon (Ray Chase), and Swamp Thing (Roger Cross).

The Blu-ray is set to contain a wealth of special features. There will be sneak previews at upcoming DC Universe movies such as Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, Justice League: Gods and Monsters, and Justice League: Doom, as well as two bonus episodes from the animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold. You can also expect featurettes based on the history of Swamp Thing, a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the movie, and the Justice League Dark panel at from New York Comic-Con.

There will certainly be no shortage of content on the physical release of Justice League Dark that will keep fans of the DC Universe occupied for some time. The movie itself joins Batman: Bad Blood and Batman: The Killing Joke as the third R-rated animated feature from DC and Warner Bros. to come out in 2016.

The hope is that this movie will garner a better critical reception than the mixed reaction for The Killing Joke on Rotten Tomatoes. An R rating and mature content alone won’t be enough for the movie to satisfy bloodthirsty fans and critics. But there’s been no indication that Justice League Dark won’t be another solid addition to the vast DC/Warner Bros. animated canon.

Justice League Dark arrives in digital form on January 24, 2017, and on DVD and Blu-ray on February 7, 2017.
