Report: Wonder Woman Heading Into Reshoots

Report: Wonder Woman Heading Into Reshoots

Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman was widely hailed as a highlight of the mixed bag that was Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Expectations for the first solo female-led superhero film since 2005’s Elektra have been sky high following the release of two awesome trailers. In fact, an argument could be made that the Wonder Woman film currently has the most positive currency amongst film bloggers compared to other DC projects.

However, Wonder Woman is also being closely watched for some of the troubles that have plagued other recent superhero movies, and now FlickReel is exclusively reporting that the film’s cast and crew are expected to return for in about two weeks’ times. So far, there has been no word on whether these reshoots were planned or if they’ve been more recently ordered by the studio in response to a current cut of the film.

Reshoots have become a cause for trepidation among some movie fans. Suicide Squad‘s problems were in part blamed on the reshoots ordered to fix the tone, and we have yet to see whether the Rogue One reshoots were as major as some reports implied. All it takes is for the word to crop up with relation to a film for people to assume the worst. So naturally, expect the naysayers to state that this is a clear sign that the film is in major trouble.

This also comes on the heels of not only the critical panning of both Batman v Superman, but an anonymous letter from an alleged Warner Bros. employee that stated the film was a “mess.” Director Patty Jenkins strongly denied those statements, taking to Twitter to counter that “zero about the movie we are making has been called a mess by anyone in the know.” However, Warner Bros. did overhaul the DC Extended Universe’s creative team this summer, reportedly due to the negative reaction to Batman v Superman.

Still, reshoots are actually a very common part of Hollywood filmmaking, and definitely do not automatically spell doom. Many of the best parts of Star Wars: The Force Awakens were added in reshoots, and it is pretty standard for major films to go back for reshoots a few months after principal photography wraps. There is a great deal riding on Wonder Woman’s success as well, outside of the continued future of the DC Cinematic Universe. As the first female-led superhero film in over ten years, no doubt the film will be held up (however unfairly) as a litmus test for whether or not female-centric comic book movies can succeed, as well as whether women can direct blockbuster action movies. However, Wonder Woman could already a strong product that is simply returning for scheduled reshoots or fixing a few parts in order to craft the best film possible.
